How is an EMV chip card more secure than a regular credit card?
On credit cards and debit cards up to this point in the US, the magnetic stripe on the back of the card held the same information that appears on the card itself (like card number, expiration date, etc.). With a chip card however, the card not only holds the same static card information, but it also generates a unique "one-time code" for each transaction. This unique one-time code is validated before the transaction is complete - providing you an extra level of security.

If the retailer/business you are transacting at has switched to EMV card readers and you want to make a purchase using your new EMV card, the following diagram explains how the reader works. If the location where you are shopping hasn’t switched to a new chip card reader, don’t worry. Your card will still have a magnetic stripe and can be used with traditional readers. Online and phone purchases are conducted the same way you currently do them.
